Today, I got up at 4:25 and made a bento for my son, who had to leave home before 5:30 to participate in a track meet. After he left home, I also made bento for my wife, my daughter, and myself. Today was Field Day at my daughter' elementary school.
Onigiri (rice balls):
Three different ingredients, salmon flakes, wakana (a type of green), and red perilla.
I tend to make more onigiri than necessary, but that's OK, because I can't have enough of them.
Sadly, three of the bento items are frozen foods: Chicken karaage, yakisoba, and edamame.
Each bento box, a free gift from a green tea dealer, has two tiers, with the upper tier provided with an air-tight lid.
Tsuki usagi (lunar rabbits) are adorable, aren't they?
Oh my goodness, those bento boxes are so cute!
ReplyDeleteYSC: Those bento boxes (tsuki usagi (lunar rabbits)) are free gifts from the green tea dealer I order from.
ReplyDeleteLooks so tasty!
ReplyDeleteNancy Heller: Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThe onigiri looks delicious! My daughter made some during her Japanese language class one day and she loves them ever since.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, when you make onigiri, do you have to squeeze the rice tightly to make them stick? When I make them, they tend to fall apart... :(
oliver: That's a good question. I'd like to discuss how to make good onigiri in my blog in the near future. Good onigiri should be lightly packed, just like good nigiri should be lightly packed, so that the rice can fall apart very easily in your mouth.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I can instantly feel nostalgic to the type of onigiri my mother used to make, big, and tightly packed.
My current method is as follows: Start with very hot rice. Put some very dense salt water on my hands, scoop some rice, and first make a round ball of rice, and then shape the ball into a triangle by lightly pressing on it four times while rotating it after each time.
