In Japan, we are now in Obon. My generous nephew, who had returned from Toyama for an annual relative reunion, gave me this butter cream cake to celebrate my 50th birthday. (My 50th birthday was actually in last year.)
日本では、今、お盆です。年に一度の親戚との再会のため富山から帰っていた私の太っ腹の甥から、50歳の誕生日のお祝いに、このバタークリームケーキをもらいました(私の50歳の誕生日は実際は去年です)。
This is the very first time that I have had a butter cream cake!
バタークリームケーキを食べるのはこれが初めてです!
Hiroyuki, this cake reminds me my childhood and guiltless pieces of butter cream, calorie- and fat-loaded layered birthday cakes... Some of my friends sometimes forget my birthday and send me messages later. I always think it's great to have one's birthday celebrated for longer ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have just read on wikipedia that obon dates are different in different parts of Japan..
I was thinking there is something missing here... obviously the birthday candles!
Sissi: The numbers 5 and 0 are birthday candles.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of butter cream cake until I moved to this mountainous, rural area in Niigata. I once asked my wife about butter cream cake, and she told me that it was popular when she was a child.
Sorry, Hiroyuki... I feel a bit stupid! There are so many wonderful decorations on the cake, I have completely missed the candles!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a child my favourite birthday cake was made with poppy seeds soaked in water (they were very soft), with layers of cocoa and butter cream an lots of walnuts. I "ordered' it from my mum for every birthday for years...
Happy birthday Hiroyuki (even if it is late).
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a "Hello Kitty" cake decoration before - very cute, very japanese. Hope the cake tasted as sweet and nice. Was it chocolate layered - looks like a slice of chocolate cake next to the cake? My husbands birthday cakes are always made with lots of dark chocolate cream and marron cream and cocoa dough layers, soaked with brandy. This cake is called Herrentorte as in cake for guys only (laugh).
Kiki
Happy Birthday Hiroyuki! The cake looks great - did you like the butter cream frosting? It's very simple to make!
ReplyDeleteHiroyuki-san, otanjoubi omedetou gozaimasu!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday, Hiroyuki! What a nice nephew you have to remember your special birthday, and what a beautiful cake. Did your kids enjoy it too?
ReplyDeleteHi Hiroyukisan, this cake looks very delicious! Happy Birthday to you! I also want to tell you that I like your blog very much! I'm now following you! ^^,
ReplyDeleteお誕生日おめでとうございます!
ReplyDeleteかわいくて美味しいケーキね!すばらしい!
Sissi: You don't have to feel stupid!
ReplyDeleteKiki: The cake was not chocolate layered but butter cream layered.
I didn't notice the tiny piece of chocolate cake when I took the photo. Later my daughter told me that she placed it near the butter cream cake so I could have it together with the cake.
In Japan, there are things called jizake cake 地酒ケーキ, spong cake soaked in local sake.
Nancy: Thank you. Quite frankly, the butter cream was just so so; I'm not accustomed to its flavor.
Anonymous: Thank you!
YSC: I didn't like to talk about it, but my daughter could not finish her portion. She said she didn't like butter cream.
Bento Cat: Thank you for your kind words about my blog!
okasan: ありがとうございます!
