My son's birthday is in April, and tonight, my children and I went to the local soba restaurant, Tabata-ya to celebrate his birthday.

My son is a huge fan of the hegi soba served at this restaurant.
息子の誕生日は4月で、今夜は、誕生日を祝うため、子供たちと3人で地元の蕎麦屋、田畑屋に行きました。
この蕎麦屋についてはすでにここで語りました。
息子はこの蕎麦屋が出すへぎそばの大ファンです。
At the entrance, we were greeted by this plant! Kogomi (ostrich fern)!
入口で、この植物に出会いました!こごみです!
We arrived at the restaurant a little over six o'clock in the evening. All the partitioned areas, which are located on the right side of the restaurant, and many of the tables, which are also located on the right side, were occupied, so we decided to sit at a low table in the large room located on the left side.
店には午後6時ちょっと過ぎに着いたのですが、店の右側にある、仕切りのあるエリアは全て、同じく右側にあるテーブルの多くはもうお客さんがいたので、左側にあるこの大部屋のお膳に座ることにしました。
I ordered one "Tabata-Ya Set".
私は田畑屋セットを頼みました。
My son ordered two servings of hegi soba.
息子はへぎそばを二人前頼みました。
My daughter ordered one "chahan set".
娘はチャーハンセットを頼みました。
I gave my tempura to my son. I am still on a diet.
天ぷらは息子にあげました。私はまだダイエット中です。
The two pieces at the front are fukinoto tempura.
前の2つはフキノトウの天ぷらです。
My daughter asked me if she could order soba dango, and I said yes.
娘に、そば団子を頼んでいいかと聞かれたので、いいよと答えました。
My children shared them (my daughter insisted that I have some, so I did).
子供たちで分けて食べました(娘がどうしても食べてと言うので、私もちょっと食べました)。
The first thing I had to do was to look for buckwheat (Soba)-dangos and I found a japanese recipe. Did you enjoy the taste?

Kiki: I knew what soba dango would taste like, and these particular ones tasted exactly the same as I had imagined. Black sesame, mitarashi (soy sauce + sugar (+ mirin)), and azuki bean paste. They were good for sure, but were not worth the price (420 yen).
ReplyDeleteWe would feel right at home, quite literally, if you sat at a low table in the tatami (straw mat) room, provided that you like a traditional Japanese house.

ReplyDeleteLooks like a wonderful dinner! By the way, my family just returned from a trip to Japan. It was the first time I had been back since my childhood (more than 20 years!) and it was so wonderful. We stayed with friends and I was filled with nostalgia. The smell, the sounds etc. It was peak sakura season in Tokyo. I was afraid that my bad and childish Japanese would not suffice, but to my amazement I was able to get around, ask for directions, buy things, make reservations etc.! It's true that things you learn in childhood really stay with you for life. My kids had such a wonderful time, we are going to try to come back next year!
