Bottle gourds (yuugao in Japanese) are a very popular summer vegetable in Niigata. For some reason, the people in Niigata call them you-goh (y + long "u" + g + long "o"). Bottle gourds are usually very large. The one shown in the photo is well over 30 cm in height, but it is relatively a small one.

Yum, I love that vegetable. I will have to try it in miso soup! I have never had it like that before. We usually stir-fry it with some ginger and/or dried, preserved shrimp.
pink: I wasn't familiar with bottle gourds when I lived in Tokyo. The people here in Niigata love this vegetable, and use it in a variety of dishes. Yours sounds like delicious!
