Shakunage Ko Matsuri 2014/

On July 27, Shakunage Ko Matsuri was held near Sagurigawa Dam, as is done around this time of year every year. One of the major events at the festival is fish catching. There are two sessions, one at 1:00 p.m. and the other at 3:00 p.m. My children and I participated in the 3:00 session. Unlike in the previous years, the two sessions were held on the main site, not in the pond near the playground.

There were much fewer rainbow trouts in the makeshift(?) pool. About 5 or 6 minutes after the start, the staff declared that the fish catching was over. My son caught only four, and my daughter one. In the previous years, one session lasted more than twenty minutes.

And, the rainbow trouts were much smaller than in previous years. Compare them with the ones we caught previously.
Three of us were all frustrated, and spent more time in a supermarket later...

I wanted to say that fishing should be organised very early in the morning (my father used to fish starting at 4-5 am because maybe fish were very sleepy... maybe less noise around...), but since it was from a farm it's a different matter.
The time was very short indeed. I wonder what you will do with the trouts...

Sissi: The rainbow trouts were released from a truck shortly before the session began. Five or six minutes later, I heard a staff member talking on a loudspeaker. I thought he would say that they would release more fish, but he said the fish catching was now over!

I simply salt-grilled them. I can't think of no other ways to eat them...

Its a shame that it ended so quickly and the trout were small!

I have some trout in my freezer that I caught during the last cold season. I'm thinking of grilling them with unagi sauce.

muskratbyte: Grill with unagi sauce? That sounds very yummy. I've never had rainbow trout kabayaki!
