Vegetable Gardening, Spring 2011/

We had a record snowfall last winter here in the Snow Country, and even after the snow melted, air temperature remained low. It's still rather low, but I decided to till the soil today, so that I can plant seedlings as soon as it gets warm.

My rented small farm, center, measuring about 4 m x 6 m, before tilling:
耕す前の、借りている小さな畑(中央、約4 x 6 m):

7 bags of fully fermented cow dung, chemical fertilizer, and organic lime:
完熟牛糞7袋、化学肥料、有機石灰:
I scattered them all over the farm:
畑に全部散らしました。
It took me about 2.5 hours to till the farm three times.
I made four ridges, like I usually do.
Finally, I covered the ridges with mulch.
To be continued.
続く。

I'm looking forward to see what you'll plant this year! I would like to have a small piece of land to plant my own vegetables... For now I have to content myself with a balcony where I grow herbs (by the way mitsuba is about 1 cm high! shiso still doesn't sprout :-( ).

Sissi: I'm going to plant seedlings soon! I'm going to plant a lot of tomato and cherry tomato seedlings because we all love them. In the tiny patches around the house, I will plant some mitsuba, green shiso, and basil seedlings, among others.

Glad to hear about your mitsuba and sorry to hear about your shiso...

Hiroyuki: You live in a cold area. This year spring arrived 3 weeks earlier down here. We had a warm and cosy april and todays temperature will reach 26 Degree Celsius (hot..). In my garden there are already little green plums and cherries, nashis and peaches on the trees. Lucky, we did not have that much cold nights during blossoming period. Today I am going to buy some tomato seedlings (hope I will find this little date sized cherry tomatoe named Cupido) and chilli seedlings (Jalapeno) too. Best time of the gardening year isn't it?

Sissi about shiso (Perilla frutescens): Next year put seeds in a fridge bag and put it in the fridge (vegetable storage area) for 14 days. Shiso needs the cold as trigger to germ or it will not sprout sufficiently.

Hiroyuki, good luck with planting! I also love cherry tomatoes.
Kiki, thank you so much for the tip! I would have never guessed. I have seen this morning two tiny shiso sprouts... I cross my fingers and hope they'll grow in spite of the hot weather (in Switzerland it's so hot, my dill grown from the seeds planted two months ago is already 15 cm high!)

Kiki: This spring has been quite unusual... But anyway, it's been warm for the past few days, and I'm going to buy a lot of seedlings this week.
