Hayashi Rice/ハヤシライス

The origin of the name of the dish, hayashi, is explained here.

I recently bought two packs of hayashi roux because my daughter said she needed one pack for her field trip.  Each group decided what to make for lunch, and her group decided to make hayashi rice, and every member of the group had to bring a certain ingredient.


Much to my annoyance, she brought back home the portion they left unused (shown on the left).  So, I made hayashi rice several days later to use up the portion together with the other pack (shown on the right).

I have just read about hayashi rice (thank you for the link) and I see it is similar to the Japanese curry, but sounds so much better! I will try to make it one day from the scratch.

Sissi: Yes, it's quite similar to curry, but is less popular than curry because it lacks spiciness. Store-bought hayashi roux is good enough, but I once made hayashi with canned demiglass sauce, and I found it much, much better.
