Dagashi (Cheap Sweets)/

Today, my daughter got these dagashi free of charge when she participated in an event held at the garbage disposal facilities nearby.
Note: Koala's March (lower right corner) and Kappa Ebisen (bag with a shrimp picture printed on it) are usually not considered dagashi.

I have fond memories of dagashi, but sadly, I'm not familiar with any of the dagashi she was given, except the Baby Star Ramen.

I think Yawaraka (= Soft) Konnyaku Jelly (center of the photo) is a good idea. Because of the shape, it should be less risky in terms of choking. (I hope I am right.)

This week, my family stayed with my parents for four days.

On our way back home, we each bought a bento in the "depachika" (department store basement) of Daimaru Department Store in Tokyo before riding the Joetsu Shinkansen.

I bought two rather expensive bento:
First-grade nigiri zushi (10 pieces)
Hon maguro (blue fin tuna) only sushi

After getting off the Joetsu Line at Shiozawa Station, we bought bento at Harimaya, a super market.

I bought this one:

Butter Cream Cake/

In Japan, we are now in Obon. My generous nephew, who had returned from Toyama for an annual relative reunion, gave me this butter cream cake to celebrate my 50th birthday. (My 50th birthday was actually in last year.)
This is the very first time that I have had a butter cream cake!

Butter Soy Sauce Flavored Popcorn, etc./

Here are some miscellaneous photos to share.

I'm busy right now, and I will add more text later.

First of all, these photos are for Kiki:
Locally grown watermelon, Yairo Suika, M size, sugar content of 13, bought recently for 980 yen.
The producer's name is indicated on the sticker.
Don't ever think that a 980-yen watermelon is expensive! In fact, it's fairly reasonable. Better watermelons can be much more expensive (> 1,500 yen).

Mike POPCORN, Butter Soy Sauce Flavor

I used to buy it often when my children were smaller. Recently, I picked one bag casually, and surprised to see that it has won the MONDE SELECTION Gold Award for two years in a row.
I love this flavor! So do my children!

Top: Chinese-style stir-fry with cashew nuts
Bottom: Katsuo no tataki (seared bonito)

Katsuo no tataki is a favorite of mine. It's both cheap and delicious!
Sorry for a not very appetizing photo. We had it with the supplied sauce (ponzu?).
I made "supa sara" (short for spaghetti salad), using leftover boiled spaghetti.

I got this amount of tomatoes and cherry tomatoes from my rented farm yesterday.
As part of supper last night, I made buta kimuchi (kimchi).
This time, thinly sliced pork and kimuchi only. Nira (Chinese chive) and moyashi (bean sprouts) should be nice additions.

Subuta (Sweet and Sour Pork) and Fried Meat Balls/

I've been a kind of busy again, but I managed to make subuta and fried meat balls as part of supper tonight.
Sorry, no description of the recipe. I used shishito instead of green peppers and instant dashi instead of chicken stock.

I made fried meat (ground pork) balls for my daughter because I thought she didn't like subuta.
I had bought a big (500 g) pre-boiled bamboo shoot, so I used about 300 g of it in subuta, and I also made clear soup with the rest of the bamboo shoot and wakame.

Ko Aji no Nanban Zuke/

I bought a pack of ko aji (small horse mackerel) on the day the flood took place (July 30), and put it in the optical partial freezing compartment of the fridge. Today (August 3), I finally got around to use them to make nanban zuke. One great advantage of a partial freezing compartment is that once I put some food in it, I can forget about its expiration date for weeks.
At first, I thought I would try the technique explained in this video at 1:25 and after to clean the ko aji, but I decided to cut off the head with the deba. Well, I thought it was a kind of scary to have them whole... (Don't laugh!)
I found one aji had a small sardine in its mouth!
Be sure to remove the blood. That being said, I failed to remove it completely (because the aji had been partially frozen?).
And, make sure you don't hurt yourself with the back fin.
I later cut big ko aji in half. I put all the ko aji in an I-wrap bag, added 2 tsp katakuriko (potato starch), and shook the bag to evenly coat the aji.
Deep-fry at a low temperature (160-170C) for 10 min. so that even the backbone becomes soft enough.
As usual, my marinade is a 3:3:1 mixture of vinegar, soy sauce, and sugar (75 ml, 75 ml, 25 ml this time).
”Where are the ko aji?", you might ask. Here they are.
I'm sure the ko aji no nanban zuke will be much tastier tomorrow!

Shibazuke/

On the night of July 28, I started making shibazuke by following this recipe (Japanese only). Luckily, I found this recipe later, which is a translation of the first one, saving me from the tedious work of translation!
The reason for the dark color of the myoga is that they had been frozen. The myoga had been frozen for a whole year!
I used two 2-liter PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles as weights.
On the morning of July 29, I got this much water coming out of the vegetables.
I searched for aka jiso in and around my yard, and found only this amount.
I had to buy some more aka jiso! I had one very serious problem: My house was flooded below floor level!

Anyway, I bought this big bag of aka jiso around noon.

Not bad, but a little too salty for my taste.
