Nemagari Take/根曲がり竹

Slender bamboo shoots called nemagari take are a delicacy that can be savored only around this time of year. They are good in simmered dishes and miso soup, but I like them simply grilled with skin on.
根曲がり竹という細いタケノコは一年のうちで今頃しか味わえない珍味です。煮物や味噌汁に入れると美味しいですが、私はただ、皮をつけたまま焼くのが好きです。


I peeled them and had them with mayo and ponzu.
皮を剥いて、マヨネーズとポン酢で食べました。

That looks simply amazing. I refuse to eat canned bamboo for any reason - but I've never had the real deal - I don't think I even had any when I visited China in 1999, it must have been the wrong time of year (November).
