We had some (about 150 g) of the yamato imo left in the fridge, and I wanted to try the tororo meshi mentioned in Episode 3 of the TV drama, Osen.

大和芋の残りが少し（150 gほど）冷蔵庫に残っていたので、テレビドラマ「おせん」の第三話に出てくるとろろ飯を試したいと思いました。

On December 23, I asked my wife to make simmered fish (righteye flounder) as part of supper that night, so I could make the tororo meshi, using the leftover broth today.

12月23日、夕飯に煮魚（カレイ）を作ってくれるよう妻に頼みました。今日、残りの汁を使って、そのとろろ飯を作れるように、です。

The original recipe (Japanese only) calls for 300 g jinenjo (wild mountain yam) and 500 ml broth from simmered fish, but I  decided to mix 150 g yamato imo and 150 ml broth.

元のレシピでは、自然薯が300 gに煮魚の汁を500 ml使っていますが、私は150 gの山芋に150 mlの汁を合わせました。 

I made mugi meshi (rice cooked with barley), following the rice to barley ratio of 7:3, which is called for by the recipe.

レシピに書かれた割合（米７、麦３）で麦飯を作りました。 

Unfortunately, my son said that he was a little disappointed because he liked the tororo to be less soupy.

残念なことに、息子は少しがっかりしたと言いました。とろろは汁っぽくないほうが好きだからだそうです。

I have just finished watching all the twelve episodes of season 1, as well as episodes 1 and 2 of season 2.  All the restaurants introduced in the drama were interesting in their own way, and I found the following three particularly interesting.

Shinya Shokudo/深夜食堂

I bought all seven volumes of the Shinya Shokudo manga book, which contains 99 episodes in total.
深夜食堂の漫画本を７冊全部買いました。全部で99話あります。

The good news (at least for me) is that in contrast to the sad ending of episode 7 of the TV drama version, in the original manga version, the entertainer and the newspaper delivery guy got back together again after the entertainer divorced the president of an IT company one year later.
（少なくとも私にとって）いいニュースは、テレビドラマの７話の悲しい最後とは対照的に、オリジナルの漫画では、タレントと新聞配達の男は、タレントが一年後にIT会社の社長と離婚してから、よりを戻したことです。

In episode 1 of the TV drama version, Kosuzu-san has an unrequited love for the yakuza, but in the manga version, things are a little different. Sometimes the yakuza ordered weenies and waited for Kosuzu-san to come.
テレビドラマの第一話では、小寿々さんがヤクザに片思いしていましたが、漫画では、ちょっと違います。ときには、ヤクザがウインナーを注文して、小寿々さんが来るのを待っていました。

The yakuza's memories of red weenies date back to his high school days, when he played baseball. The manager of his baseball club gave him a bento box full of red weenies.
ヤクザの赤いウインナーの思い出は、野球をやっていた高校生時代に遡ります。野球部のマネージャーが彼に赤いウインナーがいっぱい入ったお弁当箱を渡しました。

Unlike in episode 6 of the TV drama version, in the manga version, Master asks the boxer, "Why don't I treat you to katsudon?", and the boxer replies, "Could you make it oyakodon?"
テレビドラマの第六話とは異なり、漫画では、マスターがボクサーに「カツ丼おごらせてくれよ。」と言い、ボクサーは「親子丼にしてもらえないかな。」と答えます。

Kosuzu-san's memories of tamago-yaki date back to his young days, when Kou-chan, an employee of the gay bar where he worked, used to make tamago-yaki for him.
小寿々さんの卵焼きの思い出は、働いていたゲイバーの従業員、コウちゃんが卵焼きを作ってくれた若い頃まで遡ります。

Kou-chan is already dead, but his grand-son, who looks very much like him, comes to see him and makes him happy.
こうちゃんはもう死んでいますが、こうちゃんによく似た孫が小寿々に会いに来てくれ、小寿々は幸せです。

Bartender/バーテンダー

Bartender is another favorite of mine.
バーテンダーも好きです。

In Episode 1, Ryu makes a very special mizuwari (whisky and water) for Miwa.
In Episode 2, Ryu makes a gin fizz for Kuzuhara, his rival, that contains wasanbon (fine-grained Japanese sugar).
In Episode 3, Ryu makes a martini for a swindler.

第一話では、溜は美和にとても特別な水割りを作ります。
第二話では、溜は葛原（ライバル）に和三盆の入ったジンフィズを作ります。
第三話では、溜は詐欺師にマティーニを作ります。

Osen/おせん

Osen is another TV drama worthy of special mention here. The beauty of the thatched roof house is beyond description, so are many of the individual dishes served at the restaurant.

Kuitan/喰いタン

The TV drama, Kuitan (Gluttonous Detective), was not only amusing, but it was also very informative. For example, you can learn a lot about differences in food culture between Kanto (Eastern Japan; area in and around Tokyo) and Kansai (Western Japan; area in and around Osaka) from Episode 6 of Kuitan 2.
テレビドラマ「喰いタン」（食いしん坊探偵）は、面白いだけでなく、とても勉強になります。例えば、喰いタン２のエピソード６では、関東と関西の食文化の違いをたくさん知ることができます。

At 3:15, Kuitan finds a takoyaki machine. Osaka is famous for takoyaki. In fact, it is said that every household in Osaka has a takoyaki machine.
At 6:41, Kurara places a tray on the table that contains kitsune (lit. fox, seasoned abura age) udon in light-colored broth, Osaka-style okonomiyaki, and a bowl of rice. Other dishes shown include kushi katsu (skewered cutlets), niku-jaga (meat*-potato stew), and dashimaki tamago, which is less sweet than atsuyaki tamago in Kanto.
*The default meat in Kansai is beef, not pork. When the people in Kansai say "niku" (meat), they mean beef. In Kanto, niku means pork.
