Sengoku EXPO/戦国EXPO

As I mentioned in a previous post, Sengoku (Warring States) EXPO is held here in Minami Uonuma city from April 11 through November 28. I had never thought of visiting there, but I got one ticket free of charge because of the participation in the "tape cut" (ribbon cutting ceremony) yesterday, and I thought it might be a good idea to visit there and post photos in my blog. So, I went there today.
The site is a one-minute walk from Muikamachi Station on JR Joetsu Line.

The site of the expo was once that of "Ai Ten Chi Jin Haku Minami Uonuma", which featured the NHK taiga drama (period drama), Ten Chi Jin (Heaven, Earth, and Man), and attracted 430,000 visitors last year

In this expo, warlords who lived in the same period as Naoe Kanetsugu are displayed.

I decided to participate in the "tape cut" (ribbon cutting ceremony), where one thousand people lining both sides of 350-meter long Bokushi Dori would be requested to cut a single 700-meter long ribbon at the sound of fireworks and then the organizer would apply to Guinness.
Participants got a ticket to Sengoku (Warring States) EXPO, which is held from April 11 to November 28 here in Minami Uonuma city, as well as a pair of scissors and the portion of the ribbon that they cut with the scissors.

Sasa Dango and Chimaki/

Sasa dango (dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) are a specialty of the Niigata region. In the supermarket I frequent, a special section for the ingredients of sasa dango is set up around this time of year.

I don't know how to make sasa dango from scratch, so I buy premade ones. Today, I bought ten of them (right), together with ten chimaki (left), as requested by my wife.

Chimaki are eaten with a mixture of kinako (roasted soybean powder) and sugar (and a pinch of salt).

Chimaki are usually eaten on Tango no Sekku (Boys' Day), i.e., May 5.

Note: In Kanto (Eastern Japan), where I was born and bred, kashiwa mochi (mochi wrapped in an oak leaf) are usually eaten on Tango no Sekku, whereas in Kansai (Western Japan), chimaki are usually eaten. Here in Niigata, chimaki are more popular.
Sasa dango are also associated with Tango no Sekku, but are now eaten all year round.
