A Trip to Sanjo City, Part 3/三条への旅、パート３

Before going to STOCK BUSTERS, I got so hungry I bought these at a conbini, together with a bottle of barley tea.  I had them in my car.

STOCK BUSTERSに行く前に、お腹がすいたので、コンビニで麦茶と一緒にこんなのを買い、車の中で食べました。

Tare katsu don (a specialty of Niigata city) and pizza.

Unfortunately, there was a sign at the entrance that said, "No photographing allowed."

残念ながら、「写真撮影禁止」の看板が入り口にありました。

In short, STOCK BUSTERS is a factory outlet shop that sells bad stock items from about 100 manufacturers in Sanjo and Tsubame (city adjacent to Sanjo) 50 to 90% off the manufacturers' suggested retail prices.

簡単に言うと、STOCK BUSTERSは、三条市と燕市（三条市の隣りの市）のメーカー約100社の不良在庫の品をメーカー希望小売価格の50～90%OFFで売る、ファクトリーアウトレットショップです。

I had thought that I would spend a lot of money there, but I ended up buying only two items:

28-cm dia. ceramic-coated frying pan for 1,260 yen

Antibacterial turner for 105 yen

ここではお金を一杯使うと思っていたのですが、結局買ったのは、二点だけです。

A Trip to Sanjo City, Part 2/三条への旅、パート２

The Sanjo Kaji Dojo offers two permanent courses:  Wakugi (Japanese-style nail) making and knife sharpening.

三条鍛冶道場では、常設講座が２つあります。和釘づくりと包丁研ぎです。

The master started by wet-grinding the knives from the two ladies who came a little later than I did.  Their knives were in very bad conditions.

師匠はまず、私よりちょっと後に来た二人の女性の包丁を水砥ぎグラインダーにかけました。女性たちの包丁はすごく悪い状況でした。

As for me, I took five of my knives with me.

私は、自分の包丁のうち、この五本を持って行きました。

Then, the master started teaching how to sharpen knives to the ladies, using rough, medium, and finishing whetstones, in this order.

それから師匠は女性たちに、荒砥、中砥、仕上砥を順に使って包丁を砥ぐ方法を教え始めました。

Later, another master came in.  He said he was a plane maker.  I later learned he was more than 90 years old!  This master wet-ground all my knives except the Shigefusa kitaeji petty knife, and taught me how to sharpen knives by sharpening them himself.  Then, he told me to sharpen the petty knife with the finishing stone only.  He kindly taught me how to wrap knives in newspaper.

後に別の師匠がやって来ました。鉋を作っているそうです。後で90歳以上だと知りました！このお師匠は、私の包丁を全て（重房の鍛地ペティナイフ以外）水砥ぎグラインダーにかけて、ご自身で研ぎながら、包丁の研ぎ方を教えて下さいました。それから、ペティナイフを仕上げ砥だけで砥ぐよう言われました。また包丁を新聞紙で包む方法も教えて下さいました。

Surprisingly, they didn't charge me any fee for their service.  I had thought that the knife sharpening course would cost 300 yen per adult.  I later learned that the Dojo offers this course free of charge for the time being.

驚いたことに、料金はまったくかかりませんでした。包丁砥ぎ講座は大人一人300円かかると思っていたのですが、後で分かったのですが、当分の間、この講座は無料だそうです。

After I left the Dojo, I headed for STOCK BUSTER.

道場を後にして、STOCK BUSTERに向かいました。

A Trip to Sanjo/三条への旅

On September 20, I took a day off and made a trip to Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture.

First, I visited the Sanjo Kaji Dojo.

Kaji = Forge, blacksmith

Dojo = Training hall

９月20日、一日休んで、新潟県三条市に行きました。

まず、三条鍛冶道場に行きました。

Just in front of the entrance were fuurin (wind chimes) made with wa-kugi (Japanese-style nails) and so on.

入り口のすぐ前に、和釘などで作られた風鈴がありました。

This signboard says, Echigo Sanjo Kaji Shudan, a group of 25 businesses, including Shigefusa Hamono.

Echigo = Former Niigata

Sanjo = City name

Kaji = Blacksmith, etc.

Shudan = Group

この看板には越後三条鍛冶集団と書かれています。重房刃物を含む25の事業所の集まりです。

These and other exhibits were fascinating enough, but I didn't go there to view them.  I went there to learn how to sharpen knives.

展示物は素晴らしかったですが、それを見に行ったわけではありません。包丁研ぎを学びに行ったのです。

Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Part XVII/大地の芸術祭、パート17

After I had the lunch, I went to the Matsudai area to see more artworks.

昼食を食べた後、もっと作品を見に松代エリアに行きました。

I took a change of clothes with me so I could visit Unkai (lit. Sea of Clouds), a hot spring resort in Matsudai, but I decided not to go there this time.

松代にある温泉「雲海」に行こうと思って、着替えを持って行ったのですが、今回は行かないことにしました。

It was time to head home.

家に帰る時間でした。

A little more about BankArt Tsumari

This sheet says, "... We think we will renovate the house just as a normal traditional one.  The kitchen and bath room can be in the outside as in the old days, but they should be clean and comfortable.  While renovating the building, we wish to preserve the things in the house as they are:..."

BankArt妻有についてもう少し：

この紙にはこう書いてあります：　「...普通の家を普通の家のように改修していきた。

外にキッチンがあってもいい。お風呂を気持ちよい空間にし、外の風呂もあってもよい。

ありとあらゆる部分をそのままにしておきたい。...」

I was interested in the approach of those people because it was completely different from that of those who completed the Shedding House and the croquette house.

この人たちのやり方は、脱皮する家やコロッケハウスを完成させた人たちとはまったく違っているので、興味を持ちました。
