A Trip to Yuzawa, Part III/湯沢への旅、パート３

Yukinto is a unique restaurant in Ponshukan that is famous for their huge "bakudan onigiri".

雪ん洞（ゆきんと）とは、ぽんしゅ館にある、巨大な「爆弾おにぎり」で有名なユニークな飲食店です。

Ponshukan also has a liquor shop, Eki no Sakagura.

ぽんしゅ館には、「駅の酒蔵」という酒屋もあります。

One great feature of Ponshukan is that they are very generous with their free samples.

ぽんしゅ館の大きな特徴の一つは、試食がすごくいっぱいあることです。

But, as for me, I was more interested in this particular sake: Hajikeru Jozen Mizuno Gotoshi.

I had known of this sake (sparkling, sweet sake), but hadn't been able to find it at any of the supermarkets around here. I bought two cans for my wife and me.

このお酒（スパークリングで甘いお酒）のことは知っていましたが、この辺のスーパーでは売っていませんでした。妻と自分用に２つ買いました。

Both the skin care products and the sparkling sake are products of Shirataki Shuzo (Brewery), located in Yuzawa town.

スキンケア商品もスパークリングなお酒も、湯沢にある白瀧酒造の商品です。

Ponshukan's sign:

ぽんしゅ館の看板：

Ponshu means nihonshu (Japanese rice wine).

ぽんしゅ（ぽん酒）とは日本酒のことです。

 

When you enter Ponshukan, you will see these drunken people.

ぽんしゅ館に入ると、この酔っ払いを見れます。

Ponshukan is divided into several sections. This is a souvenior section.

ぽんしゅ館は幾つかのコーナーに分かれています。ここはお土産コーナーです。

They sell the Koshihikari rice produced in the Shiozawa area of Minami Uonuma city, which has a particular high rating.

特に評価の高い、南魚沼市の塩沢地区のコシヒカリを売っています。

This retro (classic) milling machine is not for sale.

このレトロな精米機は売り物ではありません。

They sell brown rice, too.

玄米も売ってます。

Koji Shoyu (lit. rice malt soy sauce) was intriguing, so was Tamago Kake Gohan no Shoyu (lit. soy sacue for rice with beaten eggs poured over it).

糀しょう油とたまごかけごはんのしょうゆが興味深かったです。

A Trip to Yuzawa, Part I/湯沢への旅、パート１

On April 29, I went to Yuzawa by train.

４月29日、電車で湯沢に行きました。

 

The Statue of Komako, located on the premises of Yuzawa Station:

Komako is a female character in Kawabata Yasunari's novel, "Snow Country".

駒子とは、川端康成の小説「雪国」に出てくる女性です。

 

Now you can get to know any of these beautiful okami (proprietresses) if you just stay at their Japanese inns!

今では、これらの旅館に泊まれば、美人女将に会えます！  

As for me, I had other things to do. I first went to Gangi Dori, located on the premises of Yuzawa Station.

私自身は他にやることがありました。まずは、湯沢駅構内の「がんぎどおり」に行きました。

The "Migakiya Syndicate" is a group of specialists in metal polishing who are located in Tsubame City, Niigata.

「磨き屋シンジケート」とは、新潟県燕市にある、金属研磨のスペシャリスト集団のことです。

 

After I browsed Gangi Dori for some time, I went on to Ponshukan.

がんぎどおりをちょっと見てから、ぽんしゅ館に行きました。

Buying Seedlings and Laying Mulch/苗を買って、マルチを張る

More like a personal memo.

個人的なメモのようなものです。

 

Today, I bought eleven tomato seedlings (10 varieties) at a home improvement center.

今日は、ホームセンターでトマトの苗を11本（10品種）買いました。

My plan is to grow suckers from these seedlings at home and transplant to my rented field. I hope my plan will succeed.
私の計画は、家でこれらの苗から脇芽（わきめ）を育てて、借りている畑に植えるということです。成功するといいのですが。

First,　I planted the seedlings in plater boxes.
まずは、苗をプランターに植えました。

These are strawberry seedlings (20 of them in total) that I was given from a neighbor last year.
これは、去年、近所の人からもらったイチゴの苗です（全部で20本）。

Then, I walked to the field with the necessary equipment on my sholder. It's about a 8-minute walk.
それから、必要な装備を肩に担いで畑に歩いて行きました。およそ8分で着きます。

Equipment:

Three-pronged hoe, mulch, and a snow shovel (not a proper tool for making ridges).
三つ又の鍬、マルチ、雪かき用のショベル（畝を作るためのちゃんとした道具ではありません）。

It took me about one and a half hours to make four ridges and lay mulch on each ridge.
畝を４つ作り、それぞれにマルチを張るのに1時間半くらいかかりました。

I will buy some more seedlings, but it's still rather cold, so I don't think I'll plant them during Golden Week.
苗はもう少し買おうと思いますが、まだちょっと寒いので、ゴールデンウイークには植えないと思います。
