Old Tsukiyotake and What Used to Be a Secret Spot for Oyster Mushrooms/

On October 4, I went mushroom hunting, and found old tsukiyotake (poisonous) on the log where I found mature ones last year, as I mentioned here.

On the same day, I found that the tree that had produced large amounts of oyster mushrooms almost every year had been completely destroyed. My daughter found this tree in 2009, as I mentioned here. It's really sad to see it go.

Shigefusa Kitaeji Wa (Japanese Style) Petty Knife, 180 mm, with a Left-Handed Handle/重房鍛地和ペティ、180 mm、左利き用の柄

Someone ordered a Shigefusa kitaeji wa (Japanese style) 180-mm petty knife with a left-handed handle from Yoshizawa Riko, through me, in April this year. He got it in September.
He kindly provided me with these photos to post in my blog.

Urabeni Hotei Shimeji/

Last Sunday, a nephew of mine and his mother went to Nagaoka to attend a mushroom observation event. They were lucky enough to find urabeni hotei shimeji (Entoloma sarcopum). They were very generous, and gave some of them to my son.
My son decided to boil them to remove the worms from them. Another common way is to soak them in dense salt water.
Boiled for 2-3 minutes.
WARNING:  Kusaura benitake (Entoloma rhodopolium), which is poisonous, looks very much like this mushroom.

On the same day, I went mushroom hunting in mountains nearby and got some bunahari take (Mycoleptodonoides aitchisonii), among others.

We also boiled them to remove the worms.

The next day, at the request of my son, I stir-fried one half of each mushroom, together with some chicken thigh.
Also at the request of my son, I made clear soup with the other half of each mushrooms.
My son liked them both very much, and said the stir-fry was very delicious. This is the seasoning I used to make the stir-fry:
Somi Shantan.

This product used to be sold under the name of Weipa.

Third Visit to the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale/

On Friday, September 4, I visited the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2015 for the third time. Here are some of the highlights.

I had lunch at Kiyotsuya, N-077, located in the Kiyotsu Warehouse Museum.

Only 50 of this bento are available on each day. It was already 12:20, and I didn't expect to be able to buy one. I was the 47th customer who bought the bento, and the last three were sold by others before I finished mine. Someone told me that this particular bento was very popular, selling like hotcakes. Glad I came here on Friday, not Saturday or Sunday.
950 yen. A little bit pricey, but worth the money, I suppose. No drinking water was available for free, so I bought a PET bottle of hoji cha (roasted green tea) for 200 yen.
Naturally, I thanked the staff before leaving the restaurant by saying, "Gochisousama deshita!"
Here's a message from the restaurant.
The ingredients are indicated on the back of the bento box, as well as the additives.
It was one of the most satisfying meals I've ever had while in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field.

I later unfolded the sheet of paper folded into a hexagon, and found more information about the ingredients of the bento.

At the stall by Kiss & Goodbye, T325, I bought sarunashi ice cream for 350 yen.
Kiss & Goodbye (T325)

This particular product calls sarunashi "Jomon kiwi". I wonder if the people in the Jomon period consumed sarunashi.
A trip is enhanced by good food!

The real highlight of the day was another trip to this artwork, the the Arch of Life, D312.
I found the "box of light" emitting light. I first thought the box was reflecting the evening sun.
I was wrong. This artwork had another improvement made to it: Some kind of lighting device (LED?) was attached inside the box.
Edited to add: Judging from photos taken by other people, it may be that the lighting device was installed right at the beginning, but it didn't emit light when I visited it twice.

Sadly, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2015 ends on September 13. I don't think I can make another trip there.

D312 Arch of Life, Revisted/D312

Today, I revisited D312 Arch of Life because I really like this particular artwork and I wanted to take better photos of it.

Two benches have been installed on the site.

The only downside of this artwork is that these plants require a lot of maintenance.
(I was a bit disappointed by the lack of proper maintenance.)

I recently found a very interesting video (Japanese only) on YouTube, where Fram Kitagawa talks about this and other artworks in Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. At 2:30, he says that this particular artwork should be worth 10 billion (yen).

Regardless of its "market value", I like this artwork!
